When an AI tool freezes, slows down, or closes unexpectedly, start with simple checks before clearing data or reinstalling. The cause may be a service outage, a memory-heavy browser tab, a long conversation, or a problem limited to one device. Test the same action after each change so you can identify what helped.
Identify what is going wrong
- The reply stops or never starts: check the service status and your connection first.
- Typing, scrolling, or switching messages feels slow: the page may be using a lot of memory, especially in a long conversation.
- The tab or app closes or restarts: suspect a crash caused by a software bug, resource pressure, or a browser extension.
- The tool fails on several devices and networks: the provider or your account may be involved. If it fails on just one device, focus on that device first.
Try these quick fixes first
- Check the provider's status page. If the service reports an incident, local troubleshooting may not help. OpenAI users can check OpenAI's status page; other AI providers have their own status pages.
- Reload the page or restart the app. This can clear a temporary hang, but it will not fix an ongoing service outage or underlying bug.
- Check your connection. Open another website or switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data if possible. A weak or unstable connection can make a response appear frozen even when the page itself has not crashed.
- Test another device or browser. If the same account and conversation work elsewhere, the issue is more likely to be local to the original device, browser, or network.
If the conversation is very long
A long chat can make the page harder for your browser to handle, particularly when it contains many large responses, images, or uploaded files. Some AI services may also handle very long conversations differently, so a slowdown does not automatically mean your device is failing.
Start a new chat and test a short prompt. If that works better, ask the old conversation for a concise summary of the details you need, then continue in the new one. Keep the summary focused on decisions, important facts, and the task at hand rather than copying the entire conversation.
Free up browser and device resources
- Close unnecessary tabs and programs. Video calls, design software, other AI tools, and media-heavy tabs can compete for memory.
- Check which tabs are using the most resources. Chrome has a built-in task manager that you can open with
Shift+Escon Windows. Menu options can differ by browser and operating system. - Restart the browser. Reopen only the tabs you need and test the AI tool before restoring the rest.
- Restart your device and check available storage. Free some space if the drive is nearly full; this will not fix a provider-side fault but may help broader performance problems.
Fix browser-related problems
If the AI tool runs in a browser, use these checks before resetting the whole browser:
- Update the browser. Install available stable updates, then reopen the site.
- Test in a private or incognito window. This can help identify problems caused by extensions or stored site data. Some browsers still allow selected extensions in private windows, so check their settings if needed.
- Disable extensions temporarily. Ad blockers, writing assistants, and other extensions that modify page content can sometimes conflict with web apps. If disabling them helps, turn them back on one at a time to find the cause.
- Clear the site's cache and cookies only if needed. This may sign you out and remove local site preferences, so make sure you can sign back in before doing it.
- Test another browser. If the problem disappears, compare extensions, settings, and updates in the original browser.
- Try changing hardware acceleration. In Chrome, the setting is under Settings > System. If you see display glitches or freezes, switching it off may help on some computers; if performance gets worse, turn it back on.
If the whole computer freezes—not just the AI page—the cause may be the operating system, drivers, overheating, or hardware. See our guide to diagnosing a computer that keeps freezing or crashing.
Fix problems in the app
For a phone or desktop app, try the least disruptive steps first:
- Update the AI app and install available operating-system updates.
- Force-close the app, then open it again.
- Restart the device and test the app before opening other demanding apps.
- On Android, clear the app cache if the option is available. The menu is usually under Settings > Apps > [app name] > Storage, though wording varies by device. Choose cache, not storage/data, unless you understand what resetting the app will remove.
- Reinstall only as a last resort. Before uninstalling, confirm you can sign back in and check whether any drafts or files are stored only on the device. Do not assume every app saves all data to your account.
On phones, low memory or battery-saving settings can cause apps to reload when you switch away. Close other apps and, for voice features, keep the AI app in the foreground while testing.
If one particular action triggers the crash
Notice what you were doing immediately before the freeze. A repeatable trigger is useful evidence, and it may point to a narrower problem than general performance.
- Uploading a large image or document: try a smaller file or a supported format. If only one file causes the crash, test another file before assuming the entire service is broken.
- Pasting a large amount of text: split it into smaller messages and see whether the issue returns.
- Using voice or image features: check microphone or camera permissions and test the same hardware in another app.
- Generating many images at once: reduce the number generated in one batch, if the tool allows it.
- Opening or analyzing one particular conversation or file: test a new chat or a smaller copy of the file. Keep the original until you know it is safe to remove.
When the tool is slow, but does not crash
If the page still responds but the AI takes a long time to answer, the service may be busy, the request may be complex, or the connection may be unstable. Try a short prompt without attachments or a lighter model if available. Avoid resending a request that may still be processing. If short prompts remain slow across devices, check the status page. When to contact the provider
Contact support if the same crash continues after you have tested another browser or device, the status page shows no incident, or one specific action consistently triggers the failure.
Include the details that help support reproduce it:
- The app or browser name and version, plus your operating system.
- What you were doing just before the freeze or crash.
- The approximate time and time zone.
- The exact error message, if one appeared, and a screenshot when useful.
- Whether the issue also happens in a new chat, another browser, or another device.
Do not include passwords, authentication codes, or private conversation content that support does not need.
What to do next
Check the service status, test a short new chat, free up device resources, and isolate browser extensions before changing more settings. Update the app or browser, then reinstall only if the simpler steps fail. If the problem persists, report the exact action that triggers it and the tests you have already tried.
